Another solution for installing Mac OS 9 boot-required apps on Mac OS X-only booting
Macs
We previously reported user frustration in attempting to install applications
that require a Mac OS 9 boot on 2003 Macs, which only (officially) support booting
into Mac OS X.
Sven Schaefers offers a step-by-step process for installing the older apps, using
Final Cut Pro's 1.x release as an example using a new Power Mac G4 2003, Older
Mac with Firewire, a firewire cable, and a bootable Mac OS 9.2.x System CD.
1. Turn off both Macs
2. Connect both Macs via Firewire-Cable
3. Start New Power Mac G4 2003 in Firewire-Modus (Hold the "T" key at
startup)
4. Start Older Mac from Bootable System CD
5. Go to Control Panel / Startupdisk
6. Choose as startupdisk the Volume of the New Power Mac G4 2003 / System 9.1.6.
7. Restart the older Mac.
8. Now the older Mac starts in Mac OS 9.2.2 from the New Power Mac G4 2003.
9. Install Final Cut Pro 1.2 or 2.0
10. Start Final Cut Pro 1.2 or 2.0
11. Register of Final Cut Pro
12. Important: Choose as Startupdisk MAC OS X from the New Power Mac G4 2003.
13. Restart New Power Mac G4 2003
14. Install the Final Cut Pro 3 Upgrade
An alternative solution is to put the internal hard drive of the New Power Mac
G4 2003 into the older Mac and to install Final Cut Pro 1.2 there.
